Level Walkers

The Level Walker Program is the most popular volunteer activity of the C & O Canal Association. There are 69 levels, defined by the association along the canal, which vary from 1.2 miles to 5.66 miles. The origination and termination points are usually identified by a landmark or milepost. A volunteer interested in the program can request a specific area or not to exceed distance to travel on the application. Volunteers are assigned based on the needs of the levels depending on visitor traffic. Volunteers are expected to walk their assigned area and report at least once a year, preferably more. Level Walkers report on the condition of the towpath and any hazards they encounter by reporting to the Association.

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
