Division of Resource Management Volunteer Opportunities

Weed Warriors

Volunteer to become a member of this innovative program with the National Park Service, to remove invasive, non-native, plants from the Potomac Gorge section of the C&O Canal. This region, ranging from Great Falls to Georgetown, “is one of the most biologically significant natural areas in the eastern United States,” and is home to more than 200 rare plant species. Currently, “over 130 non-native invasive plants” are threatening the plant biodiversity of this area.

Volunteers must complete the necessary 10-hour training session. Training includes classroom and field instruction in order to be able to identify and properly remove the twelve targeted species of invasive plants. Volunteers who complete this training are provided with a manual and identification cards then assigned a specific portion of park land to target. Volunteers work on their schedule and pace once training is complete. Volunteers are required to submit regular action reports documenting their work.
