2012 Volunteer Calendar Photographs  

Join our Flickr group to submit volunteer photographs of the C&O Canal National Historical Park to be considered for our 2012 Volunteer Calendar.

We are looking for photographs of all parts of the Canal through all four seasons. Lockhouses, locks, trails, visitor centers, aqueducts, canal prism, etc.

If your photograph is chosen to be included in the calendar we will contact you with more information.

Submissions will be accepted until April 1, 2011.


BGTS and Rover Business Meeting

The BGTS and Rovers are conducting a business meeting on Thursday, December 2 from 7-9pm at Potomac Pizza. Discussion will include: the Park’s priorities for the Stewards and Rovers, question and answer session, and let you put a name and face to some of your fellow volunteers.

Holiday Music at the Historic Great Falls Tavern

Come and join in the festive mood of the holiday at the Great Falls Tavern in the C&O Canal National Historical Park.  On Sunday,  December 5th at 1:00 pm, join the Gilmore’s Light Ensemble as they perform 19th century holiday music and carols at the Great Falls Tavern in the C&O Canal National Historical Park.

The Gilmore’s Light Ensemble plays and sings traditional 19th century music using hammered dulcimer, guitar, banjo, mandolin, and accordion wearing clothing of the mid-1800’s.

The concert lasts from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm and is free. Light refreshments will be served. There is an entrance fee to the park of $5.00 per single vehicle.

The Great Falls, Maryland area of the C & O Canal National Historical Park is located at the intersection of Falls Rd. and MacArthur Blvd. in Potomac, Maryland. For more information about the concert and the park, call 301-767-3714.


19th Century Christmas Along the Canal at Lockhouse 22

On Sunday, December 12th at 1:00 pm, join Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park staff and volunteers and the C&O Canal Trust at Lockhouse 22 for an afternoon of 19th Century Christmas along the Canal. Enjoy  19th century holiday music and carols performed by local volunteers dressed in mid-1800’s apparel and tour historic Lockhouse 22, featuring 19th century era furnishings and holiday decorations. Event festivities will occur between 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm. The event is open to the public and light refreshments will be provided.

The Lockhouse 22/Pennyfield area of the C&O Canal National Historical Park is located at the end of Pennyfield Lock Road off River Road near Potomac, Maryland. For more information please call the Great Falls Tavern Visitor Center at (301)767-3714. 


Civil War Remembrance Day - Music at the Great Falls Tavern

On Sunday November 21 from noon to 4 join us for a music event at the Great Falls Tavern Visitor Center.  Now that the tavern has been restored to resemble an actual tavern, it is time to get some music in there! 

So, to start things off we have invited some noted local musicians including Judy Cook, Douglass Jimerson and Bob Clayton who will perform music of the Civil War and the 1870’s in a Remembrance Day performance. View the flier here.

Palisades Volunteer Seminars

The Palisades Volunteer Seminars will be starting again in November! All volunteers are welcome to attend and we hope it will give you a chance to learn something new about the park and meet fellow C&O Canal volunteers. 

The first seminar is scheduled for November 20th from 10:00AM until 12:00PM.  It will focus on the history of the gold mines in the Great Falls area of the park.  Harold Sakayan, a long term volunteer at the park, will do a talk on the history of the Gold Mine here at Great Falls which will be followed by a hike on the Gold Mine Loop up to the mine ruins.  Hopefully we will still have some good autumn colors out on the trees.

Notice from Park Dispatch

Due to ongoing construction at Great Falls, Maryland,  no one will be allowed to park overnight there for the next 30 days.

Visitors wishing to park overnight will be directed to park in Parking Lot C at Carderock, which is the last parking lot as you drive in.

Signs/notices are posted at several locations at Great Falls. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Our Maintenance Division is in need of two volunteer flaggers (per site) every day next week. 

Conococheague Aqueduct:

Monday, Tuesday and possibly Wednesday (October 4, 5, 6)

Antietam Aqueduct:

Wednesday, Thursday and Friday (October 6, 7, 8)

Cabin John Creek Culvert:

Monday-Friday (October 11-15)
